Thousands receive care at the Commonwealth Health hospitals in Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties.

On Friday, Tenor Health Foundation announced that it has signed a purchase agreement to acquire the Commonwealth Health hospitals located in Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties.

The sale includes Regional Hospital and Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton, as well as Wilkes-Barre General Hospital and associated clinics and outpatient centers.

Congressman Rob Bresnahan represents the areas encompassing some of the purchased locations.

“What we wanted to make sure was that there was a qualified and capable buyer who understands a community-focused forward mentality,” said the congressman in a recent interview

Congressman Bresnahan said his office is working with Governor Shapiro and State Representative Bridget Kosierowski to make sure patients do not lose access to the critical services the hospital system provides to Pennsylvanians.

Recently, Tenor Health Foundation reopened a once-closed and bankrupt medical center in Mercer County.

The California-based foundation says its mission is to make sure that financially struggling hospitals can survive in a time where they struggle to find the necessary funding to keep their doors open for patients.

“So, I am a nurse and I’ve lived here for most of my life, so to have the access and knowing that if we did close those doors, people would have to travel outside of our city for care. Knowing the acute need at the time of an emergency or a complicated birth was not an option for us, said Representative Kosierowski.

Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti released a statement, saying, “Our goal has always been to keep the doors of Regional and Moses Taylor Hospital open, and to keep the dedicated staff employed. After months of conversations with Tenor, and with Gov. Shapiro’s administration, state representatives, and community foundation leaders, I am cautiously optimistic that this sale means we will continue to have quality healthcare right here in Scranton.”

The transaction will undergo review before being finalized.
