The senator frequently breaks with Democrats and is no stranger to criticizing the actions of his own political party.
Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman has a history of criticizing his own political party and siding with Republicans on major issues facing constituents across the United States.
Most recently, Fetterman voted with Senate Republicans to end the government shutdown after vowing to never vote to keep the government locked in a shutdown.
The senator went on CNN and sharply criticized his party following recent electoral losses. Fetterman urged Democrats to rethink the party’s rhetoric.
Fetterman said that Democrats have “lost the argument” nationally, and that they should be honest about why they have lost two of the last three election cycles.
He warned against labeling President Trump an “autocrat”, prolonging government shutdowns, and rejecting cooperation with Republicans on bipartisan issues such as crime prevention.
“The Right would say really rough things and names,” Fetterman said of insults hurled from sides of the political aisle. “On the Left, it was like they want me to die or that ‘we’re cheering for your next stroke,’” he said.
Following Fetterman’s stroke and rough road to recovery, questions arose from Democrats surrounding his fitness for office. He received inpatient treatment for severe depression, which worsened due to the treatment he received from members of his party.
He has sided with Republicans on the shutdown, the United States’ support of its ally Israel, and how the Democratic party has been alienating the working class.
Fetterman has been praised by his supporters for being willing to break with the Democratic party on commonsense issues such as ending the government shutdown or pushing for an end to violent political rhetoric.
