President Trump has praised “the new John Fetterman” after the Senator said calls to abolish ICE are “inappropriate and outrageous.”
Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat, recently made posts on social media about ICE that earned the praise of President Trump.
Fetterman spoke out against calls to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The senator said, “ICE performs an important job for our country,” in a post on social media.
“Any calls to abolish ICE are inappropriate and outrageous,” he continued.
Senator Fetterman also posted a screenshot of an article about the Trump administration considering amnesty for migrant workers.
“Absolutely support amnesty for the hardworking, otherwise law-abiding migrant workers. Round up and deport the criminals. We must acknowledge the critical contribution migrants make to our nation’s economy,” Fetterman wrote.
As ICE raids have increased around the country as part of Trump’s priorities to secure the border and end illegal immigration to the United States, protests against immigration enforcement have sprung up in several cities.
Fetterman has been criticized by members of his party for his staunch support of Israel and his support of ICE. In June, he accused Democrats of failing to condemn the violent anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles. He was also the first sitting Democratic lawmaker to meet with then-president elect Trump at Mar-a-Lago in January. He also voted for several of Trump’s cabinet nominees that his party voted against.
Fetterman recently told a media outlet that “ICE agents are just doing their job and I fully support that.”
“For me… [that] people in my party might want to abolish it or treat them as criminals or anything, that’s inappropriate and outrageous. ICE performs an important role for our nation,” he said.
When asked about Fetterman’s comments in support of ICE, President Trump said, “The new John Fetterman is exactly what you said. He’s right, he’s right. And we have to protect our police officers, and we will, and we have been.”
Fetterman also said in a recent interview that Trump’s praise “made my parents proud,” adding that his “whole family is Republican.”
