After a decisive win by former President Donald Trump, Harris made her concession speech to the American people.
On Wednesday at her alma mater Howard University in Washington, DC, Kamala Harris conceded the presidential race to former President Donald Trump.
Trump swept all seven battleground states in a victory that will allow him to return to the White House in January for a second term in office. Harris acknowledged the results of the election and urged her supporters to keep fighting. She said, “Sometimes the fight takes a while. That doesn’t mean we won’t win.”
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Harris’ running mate, was in the audience with his family to witness Harris’ conceding remarks. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was also in attendance.
Harris mentioned that she called president-elect Trump prior to her speech to congratulate him on his victory. She also said that she will “engage in a peaceful transition of power” in the months leading up to Trump’s inauguration in January. As Vice President, Harris will oversee the certification of Trump’s victory by Congress on January 6th.
In her remarks, Harris said, “A fundamental principle of American democracy is that when we lose an election, we accept the results… At the same time, in our nation, we owe loyalty not to a president or a party, but to the Constitution of the United States, and loyalty to our conscience and to our God. My allegiance to all three is why I am here to say: While I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign.”
