In a campaign stop for Biden’s reelection efforts in Doylestown, Newsom said winning the election will “save democracy.”
California Gov. Gavin Newsom swung through Bucks County this past weekend to stump for President Joe Biden after the June 26 presidential debate that has resulted in a variety of Democratic power brokers, donors, and newspapers calling for Biden to bow out of the race due to his mental fitness.
In his remarks to an audience at a Biden-Harris campaign office, Newsom warned the crowd that former President Donald Trump would “roll back the last half century” if re-elected this fall.
Despite campaigning for Biden, questions have followed Newsom over his interest in potentially replacing Biden if he were to step down. Newsom dodged the question at the event in Doylestown, calling the notion of an open convention—and his pursuit of the nomination—a “hypothetical that gets in the way of…promoting [Biden].”
Newsom also hit the campaign trail in Western Pennsylvania, during which he was incredulous that “we’re even debating” the strength of the economy, noting the number of jobs allegedly created under the Biden administration. While the most recent jobs report showed an estimated 250,000 jobs created last month the numbers for previous months were revised down. This is not a new phenomenon, as monthly numbers were eventually revised downward for every month of 2023 other than July according Heritage Research Fellow AJ Antoni.
Along with stops in Pennsylvania, Newsom campaigned for Biden in Michigan, where he discussed the meeting he and twenty other Democrat governors had with Biden the day before. Newsom echoed many of Biden’s reasons for his poor debate performance, saying between the time changes and foreign trips (although Biden was back in the United States from those trips 12 days before the debate), the President “took things for granted.”
Newsom also campaigned in New Hampshire, another swing state. Aside from in-person events, Newsom recently marshaled his online audiences to raise $1 million for the Biden campaign.
