After a close race that led to a legal recount, Bob Casey has conceded the Pennsylvania Senate race to challenger Dave McCormick.

After Bob Casey refused to concede the close U.S. Senate race in the state of Pennsylvania, the totals fell within the 0.5% margin to trigger a required state-wide recount. On Thursday during the recount, Casey conceded the race to challenger Dave McCormick.

McCormick previously lost to Dr. Oz in the primary election but successfully secured the Republican nomination this election cycle and will be the newest senator from Pennsylvania. On Friday, Pennsylvania’s secretary of the commonwealth announced that the recount would end at the request of Bob Casey.

After three terms as U.S. senator, Casey said, “I just called Dave McCormick to congratulate him on his election to represent Pennsylvania in the United States Senate. As the first count of ballots is completed, Pennsylvanians can move forward with the knowledge that their voices were heard, whether their vote was the first to be counted or the last.”

McCormick thanked Casey for his years of public service, saying, “Senator Bob Casey dedicated his career to bettering our commonwealth. Dina and I want to extend our sincere gratitude to Senator Casey, Terese, and their family for their decades of service, hard work, and personal sacrifice.”

As of Thursday evening, McCormick led by about 16,000 votes. There were not enough votes available for Casey to win the race. 99.8% of expected votes had been recounted. McCormick’s win gives Republicans a 53 to 47 seat advantage over Senate Democrats.
