Thanksgiving side dishes often steal the spotlight from the main course, and in Pennsylvania, stuffing is the undisputed favorite.
According to Campbell’s annual “State of the Sides” report, Pennsylvania prefers stuffing over other sides like mashed potatoes. The report found that 56% of Americans favor side dishes over turkey, and 38% would be satisfied with just sides on their plate.
The Northeast, including Pennsylvania, also shows a preference for “sweet, savory seafood, and maple syrup” flavors during the holiday meal. However, generational differences are clear: 45% of Gen Z prefers mac and cheese, while 59% of Baby Boomers stick with stuffing, followed by 32% who favor mashed potatoes.
Other popular sides include sweet potatoes, green bean casserole (which are on 62% of Midwest Thanksgiving tables), and mac and cheese.
More findings from the “State of the Sides” report show:
- More than 55% would rather pile their plates with side dishes than the turkey itself.
- 60% find more joy in cooking the sides than preparing the bird.
- Gen Z (ages 18-27) loves Mac and Cheese with 45% of the generation seeing it as their favorite side dish each year.
- Nearly 45% crave more creamy, comforting flavors, with 38% looking forward to cheesy goodness.
