Pennsylvania’s primary election is set to take place on Tuesday, May 19. Voters will head to the polls to determine which candidates will run in November’s general election. 

Here’s a look at ten primary races to watch across the state. 

PA-03 Congressional District:

A crowded Democratic primary is set to take place to decide who will succeed incumbent Rep. Dwight Evans, who is retiring at the end of this Congress. Shaun Griffith, State Rep. Chris Rabb, Dr. Ala Stanford, and State Sen. Sharif Street are battling for the nomination. Whoever wins will likely win the seat in November with no Republicans running in the deep blue district. 

The primary field has narrowed significantly to the four hopeful candidates. 

PA-01 Congressional District: 

Two Democrats are facing off in a primary to try to oust incumbent Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick in November. Democrats are targeting this seat in their efforts to flip the House. 

Bob Harvie and Lucia Simonelli are seeking the Democratic nomination. Fitzpatrick is running unopposed in the Republican primary and has succeeded for several terms as a moderate Republican in Bucks County. 

PA-07 Congressional District:

Four Democrats are vying for the opportunity to oust incumbent Rep. Ryan Mackenzie in November. Bob Brooks, Lamont McClure Jr., Ryan Crosswell, and Carol Obando-Derstine are competing for the Democratic party’s nomination. Brooks has the backing of Governor Josh Shapiro. 

PA-10 Congressional District:

Democrats Janelle Stelson and Justin Douglas are working to secure the Democratic nomination to face off against incumbent Rep. Scott Perry in the Fall. Former news anchor Stelson lost to Perry in 2024 by roughly 5,000 votes and is seen as the frontrunner to clinch the nomination. Perry was first elected in 2012. 

Stelson holds a fundraising advantage over Douglas and is supported by Governor Shapiro. 

PA-17 Congressional District:

Tony Guy and Jesse Vodvarka are fighting for the Republican nomination to attempt to take incumbent Rep. Chris Deluzio’s seat in November. Guy is Beaver County Sheriff and Vodvardka manages a manufacturing firm for springs and wire forms. 

Deluzio is running unopposed in the primary and is seeking his third term in office.

Lieutenant Governor:

Incumbent Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis will be the Democratic nominee, but two Republicans are running for their party’s nomination. Republican gubernatorial candidate Stacy Garrity has thrown her support behind Jason Richey for the position. John Ventre has stayed in the race.   

20th State Senate District:

Senator Lisa Baker has held the seat for 20 years. She is being challenged by Republican candidate Tyler Meyers in the primary race. Meyers has not faced Republican opposition in a primary race until this year. 

The lone Democratic candidate is Jackie Baker. She lost to Lisa Baker, no relation, by a more than 2 to 1 margin four years ago. 

22nd State Senate District:

Jeffrey Lake is challenging incumbent Sen. Marty Flynn for the Democratic nomination. Flynn won a special election to replace John Blake in 2021 and is seeking a second term. 

Sharon Soltis Sparano is running unopposed for the Republican nomination. 

115th State House District:

Representative Maureen Madden is seeking a sixth term in office. Anna Lopez is challenging her for the Democratic nomination. 

Republican Richard Szabo will face the winner in November as the Republican candidate.

117th State House District:

Representative Jamie Walsh is being challenged by William Jones for the Republican nomination. Walsh is seeking a second term in the seat. 

The lone Democratic primary candidate is Jeremy Benscoter who will run in the November general election.
